Summary
Lê Quang Ninh (1942-2018), formerly a Major and Commander of the 1st Battalion, 50th Regiment (abbreviated as 1/50) of the Republic of Vietnam’s 25th Division (other name: Tropic Lightning), stationed at Đồng Dù base – Củ Chi, was one of the first main-force US infantry units to participate in the Vietnam War.
For twelve years, he operated as field agent (also known as Agent 110, or T5) for the Southern Central Department, the intelligence division of the Central Executive Committee of the People’s Revolutionary Party (COSVN), deeply concealed within the Republic of Vietnam military. His decisive maneuver, the “Army Flag of Uprising,” saw him single-handedly lead an elite battalion of over 500 well-equipped soldiers to the Liberation Army on April 28, 1975, a move instrumental in the subsequent Fall of Saigon.
After the war, agent Lê Quang Ninh was awarded the title of Hero of the People’s Armed Forces, the Independence Medal, the First-class Anti-American Resistance Medal, and the First and Third-class Liberation Soldier Medals.
He passed away on June 20, 2018, at his private residence in Ho Chi Minh City.
